32nd Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Breakfast

Congratulations to the award recipients of the 32nd annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Breakfast hosted by the Phoenixville Area Social Concerns Committee! This year’s event, held on April 11th at the Phoenixville Area Middle School, again brought the community together to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and the values of justice, compassion and unity.

Each year, the community nominates individuals and organizations to receive acknowledgement of their demonstrated commitment to the values of Dr. King. This year, the Emma Valenteen “Award of Compassion” was awarded to Glenn Moses posthumously, the Ruby Amour “Love Thy Neighbor Award” was presented to Nancy Thomas, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Humanitarian Award” was received by Tienfong Ho. Thanks to each of you for making a positive difference in our community.

The annual Student Expression Contest focused on ‘leading with compassion.’ The three winners were Schuylkill Elementary students: Marceline Kane, Emilia Saia, and Madie Welz who each received citations form Mayor Peter Urshceler and the Chester County Commissioners as well as a $200 check. We are honored to see Dr. King’s commitment to compassion continued by our local students.

Phoenixville alum, Major League Baseball player, and businessman André Thornton gave the Keynote talk.

The event began with Lisa Vinson singing A Change is Gonna Come and returning at the end of the program with a powerful original piece The Dream is Still Alive. Rev. Mark Young then led the attendees in reciting together the Community Affirmation created by Diversity In Action in 2017 in support of social justice that was followed up by Rev. Doug Hagler ‘sending us forth’ to continue Dr. King’s good work.

The mission of the Social Concerns Committee is to promote community and racial harmony throughout the Greater Phoenixville area in the spirit of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through direct action and relevant events.
